da heads bet: Both Ruben Amorim and Enzo Maresca were sacked in quick succession in the Premier League, as West Bromwich Albion also got in on the act in the Championship.

da gbg bet: Just a day on from Amorim’s dramatic exit at Manchester United, West Brom would confirm that Ryan Mason had been relieved of his duties, with a last-minute loss at Leicester City his last slice of action as an underwhelming Baggies head coach.

It had been coming, with that defeat sticking out as West Brom’s 13th loss of the second-tier season already.

Now, it’s up to a new manager to swiftly turn around fortunes at the Hawthorns, as promotion could still be possibly be on the cards.

West Brom's options after Mason sacking

Amazingly, West Brom find themselves just ten points short of the playoffs at the moment, despite Mason steering the Baggies to a dreadful ten league defeats in a row on the road, before being given his marching orders.

There is still a campaign to salvage, and the responsibility to pick up the pieces could fall to Michael Carrick, who is being consistently linked with a move to the Hawthorns, having remained unemployed after leaving Middlesbrough behind in 2025.

Yet, with Carrick also being tipped to be one of the frontrunners for the Red Devils vacancy, as the powers that be at Old Trafford look for a short-term fix, it might well be unlikely that the 44-year-old is handed the West Brom gig with all the competition at hand.

Names such as Carlos Corberan and Russell Martin have also been floated about, but another ongoing rumour involves former England interim boss Lee Carsley taking over from Mason.

As per the Express and Star, the ex-Republic of Ireland international is a ‘possible candidate of interest’, having previously been contacted about the Baggies job.

Having managed in the EFL in the past with Brentford, Carsley would surely jump at the chance of hopping back into a Championship hot-seat, with the Birmingham-born head coach arguably a better option to bring in than Carrick.

Why Carsley would be a better option than Carrick

Carrick does have Carsley beaten when it comes to their respective experiences of the Championship, with the ex-Boro boss picking up a high 57 league wins on Teesside, before the wheels came off his stay at the Riverside Stadium.

Indeed, his final full season in charge would see his Boro side stumble to 18 league defeats, with Carrick’s heart perhaps not in another Championship tussle, as he eyes up the temporary job at the Theatre of Dreams.

Whereas Carsley would be chomping at the bit to throw himself into the West Brom challenge that faces him, having been an undoubted success when managing the Three Lions at U21 level.

Two stunning Euros triumphs have come the 51-year-old’s way when in charge of the U21s, with the likes of Nottingham Forest playmaker James McAtee noting that Carsley is a manager that “just fills you with confidence” when excelling under his tutelage.

This will surely be music to the ears of West Brom fans, as Mason has left his Baggies camp with their confidence levels on the floor.

Attacking midfielders such as Isaac Price would also be pleased if Carsley were to be handed the reins after Mason, based on McAtee’s comments, with Price’s form falling off a cliff towards the end of the 34-year-old’s turbulent reign in charge.

But, with five goals and two assists next to his name towards the early stages of the season, the hope will be that Carsley can reignite the ex-Everton midfielder’s Baggies career, having also been said to have a “refreshing” impact on players by Arsenal battler Declan Rice, when steering the England senior ship smoothly after Gareth Southgate departed.

Off the back of experiencing such widespread success with the Three Lions, Carsley can boast a seriously impressive 73 career wins as a manager, with Carrick’s 57 Championship victories falling somewhat flat, subsequently.

Further described as an influence that made him get “his smile back” for England by Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham, it remains to be seen whether the 4-2-3-1 boss would be able to instantly adjust to the West Brom gig, away from the glamour of Wembley.

But, with Carrick in the Red Devils reckoning, the 50-year-old would be a more than fitting other choice, as he potentially attempts to add to his six wins already in the Championship, with the stuttering promotion hopefuls.

Better than Carrick: West Brom could re-hire "elite" Mason replacement

West Bromwich Albion fans would be overjoyed if this manager target came in to replace Ryan Mason.
