The report states that the Toffees would prefer an initial loan deal given the Argentina international’s injury problems – he managed just five league appearances last term.

The 29-year-old was reportedly a target for Marco Silva last summer, and the Toffees appear to have revisited the situation after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer allowed the former Sporting Lisbon defender to leave following the arrival of Harry Maguire.

Everton are in desperate need of at least one centre-back, with just Michael Keane and Yerry Mina as their only two senior options as of now – it seems as if the 6 foot 2 man could be their answer after an approach for Chris Smalling was rebuffed.
