Former India Test cricketer Madhusudan Rege, who played one Test for India in 1949, died on Monday aged 89.The right-handed opening batsman made 15 and 0 in his only Test, against West Indies in Madras. He played 39 first-class games, including 22 for Maharashtra, between 1944 and 1955, scoring 2348 runs at an average of 37.26 with six centuries and 12 fifties. Two of those centuries came in a losing cause against Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy semi-final in March 1949, when Rege followed a first-innings knock of 133 with 100 chasing a mammoth total of 959. Maharashtra fell short by 354 runs, in spite of Rege’s innings and a ton from Sharad Deodhar.Rege’s offspin bowling fetched him 33 wickets at an average of 42.96, which included a sole five-for.
